In 1859, “Company Shops” was born as a town for railroad repair headquarters in Alamance County. In 1893, the Company Shops was renamed and Burlington was established. In 1908 E.M. Holt Built the first cotton mill in the south and the textile industry in Alamance County began.

Throughout this century-and-a-half of economic change, Downtown Burlington grew, adapted and prospered. The downtown area still serves the community with financial services, government services, an expanded library, small retail, service shops and eateries. Downtown is also home to the restored Paramount Theater and the North Carolina Railroad Station and Museum.

Future...

Laboratory Corporation of America made a commitment to stay in downtown in 2006. LabCorp is currently building a state of art the office and training center on Spring Street, at the site of the former Kayser-Roth Building. LabCorp is one of the world's largest biomedical testing firms and Burlington/ Alamance County's largest employer. A blend of old and new, Downtown Burlington is poised for a continued prosperous and dynamic future.

Master Plan update

The City Council endorsed the Burlington Downtown Corporation's effort to move forward with the master Plan for downtown at the Burlington City Council Meeting on April 1.
